Pentax-K5 Digital SLR Camera

Pentax is a brand by Hoya Corporation. The K-5 Pentax is the brand name for their Pentax Ricoh Imaging Company, which develops cameras and binoculars. Hoya sold the imaging company Pentax to Ricoh, company, Ltd. The corporation is very well known for their cameras, which we all know as Pentax. Hoya still designs develop and market cameras under their Pentax brand name. Pentax has developed some comprehensive varieties of lenses for the APS-C format, which is dominating the DSLR photography.

 

The K-5 Pentax Design:

The design of the K-5 Pentax is very similar to the K-7 from Pentax. The K-5 looks very handsome, sleek and elegant. The K10D was the model which Pentax introduced as their first foray into the DSLR market, and were seen competing with the Cannons and the Nikons. Four years later, Pentax has offered to the market the K-5 Pentax, for any serious photographer. Pentax again will be fighting for market share along with the Canon 7D, Nikon D7000, and the Olympus E-5. The product is priced similar to the competitors. The K-5 is a perfect camera for the casual photographer, as well as the amateur. It is very rugged and compact, like carrying the whole studio with you. The K-5 and the K-7 from Pentax will stay on in the Pentax stable, even though there are just one or two features which are introduced in the K-5. The additional Flex (FX) label on the RAW button and a slight redesign of the AF switch at the rear, there are no significant changes in the K-5 from its predecessor. So what has changed in the K-5? The K-5 carries a 16.3 megapixel CMOS sensor. The new sensor brings in max sensitivity and continuous faster shots, with 1080p full HD video mode. The other changes are an upgraded SAFOX IX+ AF system, which has been installed into the K-5 from the medium format 645D. The changed features include the color-detection, wider coverage of the AF points and a significant improvement in speed. The new dual ñaxis electronic horizon, extra filters, and custom image modes are some new additional features incorporated into the K-5 Pentax.

Key Specifications:

Though the K-5 looks distinguishably similar to its predecessor the K-7, it does carry some improvements in its specifications. They are as follows:

16.3 Mega Pixel CMOS sensor: The K-5 is equipped with a high resolution 16.3 mp CMOS sensor, which is integrated with an AD circulatory conversion capture, which produces outstanding image quality. The new sensor features the on-chip analog to digital conversion, which reduces noise levels. The K-5 Pentax produces the maximum resolution of 4,928 x 3,264 pixels. The lower resolution options are also available.

1080p HD movie Mode: The K-5 has several amounts of changes in its movie mode from its predecessor. It has been replaced by a 1080p, 25 frames per second mode, also known as the Full HD. The K-5 captures stunning video quality in full detail, including the sound thru the built-in or the external 3.5mm stereo microphone jack.

Triple-axis sensor based shake reduction: In body shake reduction saves cost and ensures the glass is stabilized at longer focal lengths. The K-5′s stabilization system stays active for a few seconds after you let go off the shutter buttons. No more waiting and blurry images.

The new 11 point SAFOX lX + Autofocus System: The K-5 has a highly responsive and very accurate 11 point SAFOX IX autofocus, with a dedicated AF assist lamp and wavelength sensor for improved focus and speed. It improves low light focus and more accurate and stable AF.

Processor: The K-5 is equipped with a PRIME ll image engine, like the K-7. There is a significant improvement in the sensitivity and burst speed. The noise reduction settings can be specified according to the ISO basis. There is an improved noise performance throughout.

3 inch LCD: The 3 inch LCD offers 921,000 dots of resolution. The display is an in-plane switching TFT type, which offers horizontal and vertical viewing angles, and also anti-reflective coating.

Flash: The Pentax K-5 includes the hot shoe, PC socket for external flash, studio lighting and an in-built popup flash. The built ñin flash can be set to act as a controller. Four cameras or flash setups can be used without interfering with each other with the Pentax wireless flash system.

ViewFinder: The K-5 has retained the glass prism-type TTL optical viewfinder. It offers 100% field view. Interchangeable four focus screens are available. This entire feature is for perfect framing accuracy.

7 FPS: 7fps frame rate captures fast shots and helps in continuous shooting. The K-5 offers variety of other drive mode options. The mirror lockup feature helps prevent vibration in long exposures.

White Balance: Auto preset modes, 3 manual and 3 Kelvin temperature presets are available.

Exposure Modes: The exposure modes included are fully automatic, manual, bulb, shutter and aperture priority, and hyper program mode. All these modes can be selected via a custom menu.

Lens Distortion Correction: The K-5 Pentax can correct lens distortion and lateral chromatic aberration in camera, while using the DA and the DFA lenses. These corrections have a negative impact on the burst shooting speed, except in the RAW mode.

Pentax PEF and Adobe DNG files: Support for both the PEF and Adobe DNG RAW files, helps in retrieving RAW data from the JPG files if present in the buffer.

HDR: Improved in camera HDR option captures more blending and better pixels for easy operation without the use of a tripod.

Shutter: The K-5 shutter is capable of 1/8,000 seconds shutter speed. It freezes even the fastest action without a blur.

Magnesium alloy body: It has a compact and rugged looking body.

77 segment metering system: This feature assists in perfectly exposed pictures even in low and difficult lighting.

HDMI Port: The K-5 is provided with a HDMI port for transferring high definition video and pictures to a HDTV. It also has a USB 2.0 hi speed port.

 

The K-5 Pentax uses lithium ion battery pack. The life of which is rated at 980 shots without the use of flash. 440 minutes of playback when charged. The K-5 supports SD, SDHC, and the latest SDXC cards on current firmware. The K-5 does support the Eye-Fi’s Wi-Fi capable secure digital cards. There are also two new playback mode filters. The K-5 comes with a new version of Pentax software. Pentax has also announced new WR lens. They are weather resistant lenses.

The K-5 Pentax is a strong contender in the 16 to 18 mp DSLR market. It has excellent strong body, superb image quality, making it a very high quality camera.
